I have performed more than 50,000 food forensic examinations and presented expert testimony in food forensics more than 100 times in 31 states. He has also demonstrated his expertise in food forensics/food safety. Through presentations to the food industry at multiple venues including the Food Safety Summit, I have consistently demonstrated my expertise in the field.
For 23 years, I worked as director/lead scientist at the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association’s food forensics laboratory. After my retirement, I provided my services to attorneys representing clients in food-borne safety complaints and as a consultant for:
I identify submitted and alleged foreign material found in food and determine if the alleged foreign material was packed with the food. Review allegations of acute food-borne illness and provide expert testimony as needed.
Analyzed exhibits for food-borne pathogens, foreign substances (from insects, animals, and other external sources) and performed container evaluations to detect defects and/or damage. I also provided technical evaluation of microbiological issues to personnel in the Claims Division and member companies and also offered expert testimony in court in 34 states.
In this capacity, I conducted research on food poisoning organisms, inhibitory factors, and various food products to explore the relationship between these parameters. This included being considered and utilized as an expert in food-borne illness by the GMA and member companies.
I was responsible for testing animal specimens for the presence of bacterial and parasitic pathogens. Directed and performed all quality control in the department, maintained and ordered all department supplies, and conducted sterility and mycoplasma testing of parenterals and other test articles.
I personally supervised and analyzed public and private water, food samples, and human clinical specimens for microbial pathogens. Also responsible for all QC/QA in compliance with CFR and GLP, I prepared yearly budgets for the laboratory, as well as designed and conducted several research projects (including the occurrence of Yersinia enterocolitica in raw and prepared chicken).
